In a country of 6.3 million where over half the population is under 19 years of age, effective teaching of children is very important. Almost all the 460 local churches of CBC have Sunday Schools. Although the situation is uneven, in some areas, the SS teachers have had little in the way of specific training for the task. Others lack the funds to purchase the good resources that are available.
In December 2006, the Sunday School teachers of the churches around Guala Christian Centre, Koroba, Southern Highlands Province, organised a special celebration to coincide with the visit of former missionary Bev Kater (Forlong), her son Bruce and two grandsons. Some of the teachers were taught by Bruce's father, Howard.
Sunday Schools are regarded as an essential ministry to care for the next generation, train children in the faith and Christian behaviour, and retain them in the church community. And with the population explosion, there are large numbers in the communities to be reached for Christ and discipled.
They request assistance in the purchase of excellent Sunday School lesson materials available through Christian Books Melanesia and other Sunday School aids. Also funds are needed for Sunday School teacher training and refresher courses.
Donations of NZD $100 - $200 per Sunday School would make a very significant difference. Churches could adopt the Sunday Schools in a specific area. Or earmarked donations for Sunday School ministry can be allocated by the Church Ministries Coordinator in Wewak according to need. |
